from the artist…

“I received my undergraduate degree in Theater in Johannesburg, South Africa, and my MFA at Claremont University in California. My practice spans painting, sculpture, installation, and performance, with each discipline chosen in response to the idea I want to explore. For me, making is a way of working through experience, translating what feels unresolved into form.

I grew up in the Midwest in a resourceful family of Norwegian and Swiss heritage. My mother could make anything with her hands, while my father salvaged objects from neighbors' discarded piles, finding value where others saw none. I am drawn to simple, tactile materials-wood, blankets, yarn, found objects-that allow the hand's presence and the roughness of process to remain visible.

My recent project, The Locals Project, reflects my interest in connection and human essence. I photographed people in Utah who offered me simple kindnesses and later painted their portraits quickly in the studio. These works honor generosity without expectation, celebrating the deep humanity revealed in everyday encounters.”
